About the Client

Xiangyang Vocational and Technical University is a higher education institution in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, with a campus that includes teaching buildings, exhibition spaces, and areas of cultural and historical interest. As the university has expanded its visitor and orientation programs — welcoming prospective students, alumni, delegations, and members of the public — the need for a consistent, hands-free way to guide visitors through campus without relying solely on staff-led tours has grown.

The Challenge

Traditional campus tours depend heavily on the availability of trained guides or docents. For a university campus, this creates a few recurring pain points:

  • Guided tours are difficult to scale during peak periods such as open days, orientation weeks, or large group visits.
  • Visitors moving through different buildings or exhibition areas at their own pace often miss context that a live guide would normally provide.
  • Manual, speaker-based narration can create noise interference between multiple simultaneous tour groups moving through the same spaces.

The university was looking for a self-service solution that could let visitors explore campus areas independently, trigger relevant commentary automatically as they moved from one point of interest to another, and reduce dependence on live narration — all without added complexity for visitors to operate.

The Solution: YingMi i7

YingMi supplied the university with its i7 Automatic Induction Guide System, a wearable, RFID-triggered self-guided tour device designed for exactly this kind of walk-and-listen experience.

How it works: Visitors wear the i7 receiver as they move through campus. As they approach an RFID trigger point near a building, exhibit, or point of interest, the device automatically detects the signal and begins playing the corresponding audio commentary — no buttons to press, no manual instructions needed. As the visitor continues walking to the next point, the device seamlessly switches to the new content.

Key product characteristics that made the i7 a fit for a campus environment:

  • Automatic, hands-free triggering via RFID sensing, removing the need for staff to manually start or explain each segment of the tour.
  • Large content capacity, supporting up to 9,999 pre-stored audio segments, which allows the university to build out detailed, multi-stop commentary across different buildings and areas over time.
  • Multi-language support across 8 languages, useful for a university campus that receives both domestic visitors and international guests or exchange delegations.
  • Stable, interference-resistant signal transmission, so multiple visitors or groups can move through campus simultaneously without audio overlap or dropout.
  • Compact, lightweight wearable design, making the device comfortable for visitors during longer walking tours.

Implementation

YingMi worked with the university to plan RFID trigger placement at relevant points of interest across campus and to load the corresponding narration content onto the i7 units, in line with the standard customization workflow YingMi follows for institutional clients — from requirement confirmation through sample testing and final deployment. The device's OEM/ODM flexibility also means the university retains the option to expand or adjust content, add trigger points, or customize the units further as its visitor programs evolve.

Outcome

With the i7 system in place, Xiangyang Vocational and Technical University is able to offer visitors a self-guided way to explore campus, with commentary that plays automatically at the right location and moment — reducing reliance on live guides for routine tours while keeping the visitor experience informative and consistent. The multi-language capability also positions the university to better accommodate international visitors as part of its broader outreach and exchange activities.

Why It Matters

This deployment reflects a broader trend among educational institutions, museums, and heritage sites: moving from staff-dependent narration toward automated, location-aware guide systems that scale more easily with visitor volume. For universities in particular, a self-guided induction system like the i7 offers a practical way to support open days, orientation events, and everyday campus visits without adding administrative burden.
